Château Margaux is an exceptional wine property, where the best wines of Bordeaux are produced. Chateau Margaux is the first of the five First Growth red wines of Bordeaux, made from a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The vineyard is planted with vines averaging more than 40 years of age, but many vineyards have vines more than a century old. Château Margaux is a French wine producer in the appellation of Margaux, part of the wine-growing region of Bordeaux. Since 1815, the estate has been owned by members of the Mentzelopoulos family.

Château Margaux produces one of the most expensive red Bordeaux wines in the world, from the appellation of the same name. It is also one of the five first growths, or Premiers Crus, to be included in the popular 1855 Classification (which ranked the top wines of all Médoc at that time). The winery was founded in 1152 and was initially run by monks, until being taken over by Dutchman Pierre de Mazet for centuries after it moved out of religious ownership. From 1716 onwards, Château Margaux became one of France’s most famous and well-respected vineyards. This is largely thanks to its famed vintages from 1811 and 1816, according to legend. But just as it was beginning to lose its appeal to the other prestigious vineyard nearby, a new owner took over – Louis Gaspard d’Estournel (known as “the Maharaja”) and subsequently brought back Château Margaux’s former glories.

Today, his estate still stands proudly with some of Bordeaux’s best vineyards: like that of Château Haut-Brion. Since the 1500s, Château Margaux has been a continually evolving entity. Just as forces of nature created this unique terroir, nature also continues to have its influence on this great estate. Symmetry matters to Margaux. Their wines are always created from carefully balanced components: tannic structure, fruit, and elegance. The Château Margaux vineyard is located in the Médoc town of Cantenac, on the left bank of the Garonne River in Bordeaux.

The estate’s first vintage was released in 1787, and today it remains under family ownership. Across its history, it has earned an excellent reputation as one of the top producers of red Bordeaux wines. The grand vin is invariably a blend of mostly cabernet sauvignon and merlot grapes, with small quantities of Petit Verdot and cabernet franc. Production is limited: on average each year some 26,000 cases are produced from 125 hectares (300 acres) of vines.

The Château was built around a central courtyard in the 17th century, by the Marquis de Poubredon, but the property’s origins can be traced to 1125 when Margaux was part of an extensive domain owned by the Count of Bordeaux. According to legend, the first vines were planted in 1190. In 1817, it earned the distinction of being incorporated with its name as a brand. However, since 1993, it has been classified as simply a Premier Grand Cru Classé, or ‘First Growth’. The wines are all 100% Pauillac grapes and are typically over 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

The estate was classed as a First Growth in the Classification of 1855.
